Music in Yiddish Cinema

One of Metropolitan Klezmer's specialties is the fascinating range of music found in vintage Yiddish film soundtracks, from tango to tragic lullaby to tenement wedding dance. The band performs both little-known folkloric gems and tunes which show interchange between Yiddish and mainstream popular cultures.

An exploration of lesbian and gay subtext in Yiddish cinema during its heyday, from the 1920's to the outbreak of World War II, reveals distinctly Jewish concerns of the time intertwined with a striking array of allusions to this highly-charged subject.

Di Fire Korbunes

The Remember the Triangle Fire Coalition was organized to commemorate the tragic and lamentable Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire of March 25, 1911, in which 146 garment workers died due to the criminally negligent actions of the factory owners. The event became a rallying cry for the international labor movement and impetus for many of our fire safety laws.

Eve Sicular will moderate an online panel discussing the seldom-seen Yiddish film "Der Lebediker Yosem" (The Living Orphan aka Mayn Zundele /My Son) for Yiddish New York 2020: Tuesday 12/29 PM2, 3:15-4:30pm.

This Sholem Secunde /Chaim Tauber musical melodrama directed by Joseph Seiden features half a dozen diverse tunes interspersed with backstage family drama, comic routines, 1939 NYC location shots, and a cast of Yiddish stage veterans (including child star Jerold Rosenberg who grew up to become Jerry Ross, co-creator of Broadway hits "Pajama Game" & "Damn Yankees"").

Screening online now til Dec 30 via yiddishnewyork.com film fest, and panelists Allen Lewis Rickman & Rokhl Kafrissen; Josh Waletzky co-moderates with Eve; and an original cast member joins for a YNY2020 special appearance.

Metropolitan Klezmer's Jubilation! 25th Anniversary presented in partnership with Village Preservation and the Museum at Eldridge Street.

Now celebrating their 25th year together, Metropolitan Klezmer brings eclectic exuberance to Yiddish musical genres from all over the map. Performing vibrant versions of gems from wedding dance, trance, folk, swing and tango styles, as well as soundtrack material from vintage Yiddish films, this octet re-invents tradition with both irreverence, respect, and joy. This special performance will also feature a rarely heard repertoire including balladry of the Triangle Fire, a Yiddish-rooted Soviet animation score, and a gorgeous range of imaginative original compositions.
